SUNNY’S SURPLUS ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RE-LOCATE CARROLL COUNTY LOCATION TO WESTMINSTER CROSSING
Retailer specializing in clothing and products geared to outdoor lifestyle
to take advantage of visibility and tenant mix at 225,000 square foot project
Owings Mills, MD (October 9, 2006) – Sunny’s Surplus has signed a lease with Greenberg Gibbons Commercial Corporation for 5714 square feet of space at Westminster Crossing, a 225,000 square foot shopping center located at the intersection of Englar Road and MD Route 140 in Westminster. The retailer, which was founded in 1948 and operates fifteen locations throughout Maryland, Northern Virginia and Delaware, is re-locating its store which is currently at 625 Baltimore Boulevard in Westminster.
The new site, which is positioned approximately two miles west of the existing store, is expected to be operational in time for the holiday shopping period.
Sunny’s Surplus was originally started to take advantage of the military surplus of apparel and outdoor-related gear and accessories left over from the World War II era. Commonly found items include military uniforms, camouflage clothing, combat boots, dog tags, equipment and tents. The store now carries name brand outdoor clothes, work-wear, camping supplies, scout uniforms and products and Baltimore Ravens gear.
The retailer joins anchor stores that include Bed, Bath & Beyond, Marshall’s, Michael’s Stores, Office Depot, SuperFresh and Old Navy. Last year, Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar opened its first restaurant in the State of Maryland at Westminster Crossing.
“Sunny’s Surplus is an extremely well-known brand name in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. region, and they have been successful with their distinct and unique product offering that has been refined and improved over the years,” explained Brian Gibbons, President and CEO of Greenberg Gibbons Commercial. “This brings another destination retailer to Westminster Crossing.”
“We have tracked the pace of national tenants that have been added to Westminster Crossing over the past two years, and we wanted to take advantage of the outstanding visibility and traffic flow that exists at the center,” stated Benjamin Gilbert, President and CEO of Sunny’s Great Outdoors, Inc. “Greenberg Gibbons has done a remarkable job of injecting new life into this project with its merchant and property management upgrades,” he added.
“For consumers that were raised in the Baltimore area in the 1950s and 1960s, the mention of Sunny’s Surplus conjures up images of military-style clothing and of shopping adventures to its stores, to rummage through its ever-changing variety of merchandise,” said Erwin L. Greenberg, Chairman of the Board of Greenberg Gibbons Commercial. “A retail venue is most successful when it is filled with compelling and interesting merchants, and Sunny’s brings a nostalgic element to our center. The brand is a true icon in our region,” he added.
