LA FITNESS SELECTS THE VILLAGE AT WAUGH CHAPEL AS THE SITE OF ITS INAUGURAL LOCATION IN MARYLAND
48,000 square foot free-standing building currently under construction, with completion and opening scheduled for the middle of 2008
Owings Mills, MD (February 22, 2007) – LA Fitness, which operates a network of more than 150 sports clubs throughout eleven states, has selected The Village at Waugh Chapel as the site of its inaugural location in the State of Maryland. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Irvine, CA, the company signed a lease with Greenberg Gibbons Commercial Corporation for 48,000 square
feet of space, to be contained in a free-standing building near the center’s entrance on MD Route 3. The club is expected to be operational by the middle of 2008.
LA Fitness differs from the traditional center by offering a range of classes and activities geared towards all ages of the family, maintaining an open and friendly environment and by keeping its services at affordable prices. In addition to its fitness center package of cardio and strength equipment, most clubs are equipped with a heated lap pool and spa, basketball and racquetball courts, indoor cycling, personal training and Kids’ Klub services.
A variety of classes are offered such as cycling, kick-boxing, yoga and aquafit and sports leagues are organized for activities including racquetball, tennis and basketball. The nearest clubs are currently located in New Jersey.
“LA Fitness is an excellent addition to The Village at Waugh Chapel as it brings another unique lifestyle element to the project, and its refreshing philosophy integrates and involves all members of the family,” stated Brian Gibbons, President and CEO of Greenberg Gibbons Commercial. “The retailer places extreme emphasis on adding variety and enjoyment to the workout experience, as well as forming healthy lifestyle habits at an early age,” he added.
The Village at Waugh Chapel is a 71-acre mixed-use project positioned within minutes from Interstate 97 that combines 425,000 square feet of retail space with senior living units, office space and a restaurant park. The project is located in the Crofton area of Anne Arundel County.
Last year, Greenberg Gibbons Commercial revealed its plans for Waugh Chapel Village South, an addition to The Village at Waugh Chapel featuring approximately 550,000 square feet of retail space, more than 110,000 square feet of office space and 228 residential units. Wegmans Food Markets has signed a lease for 140,000 square feet of space to become the anchor tenant of this new retail venue.
“We are gratified by the decision of LA Fitness to choose The Village at Waugh Chapel as their entry point into Anne Arundel County and the State of Maryland, as this choice demonstrates the differentiation of product that we have created here,” stated Erwin L. Greenberg, Chairman of the Board of Greenberg Gibbons Commercial. “This center has consistently attracted merchants that are new to the market and, as a result, we have created a shopping experience that offers a diverse and unique blend of tenants,” he added.
Greenberg Gibbons Commercial, which was founded in 1968, focuses on the acquisition, development, leasing and management of mixed-use properties and retail shopping centers in the Mid-Atlantic region. The firm builds value in these holdings through asset management, re-development and leasing activities. The company presently owns and manages eighteen properties totaling more than three million square feet of space.
